Too late for googlag. And do all you goracle myrmidons feel better now?
Googlag's empty earth hour solidarity gesture of 'cyber darkness' on its home page is actually counter-productive to energy conservation - displaying black increases an LCD monitor's energy usage.
That's not all.
According to Harper’s Magazine, Google is an “energy glutton.” Check out the blueprint of their server farm in The Dalles, Oregon, home of “some of the cheapest electricity in North America.” It’s powered not by magic pixie dust (my longtime theory), but by the Columbia River. Every time you search Google Images for pre-pregnancy Britney pics, God kills a kitten and Google kills a salmon. But wait! There's more.
Google and its competitors have now started building data centers in places like Lithuania, Dublin, Siberia, and Shanghai. What do all these locations have in common? Except for Lithuania, where 78% of the power will be nuclear, all of them rely on carbon-spewing energy production with lower prices and fewer controls on emissions. So much for Earth Hour, eh?EM @ HA summed it up very nicely:
"There are many good reasons to work towards energy independence and the reduction of emissions from hydrocarbon-based energy production, but no good reason to cheer for darkness. Earth Hour is just another absurdity from a movement full of them."
