Morning Coffee - Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

"If you wonder how the USA is doing relative to other transparent nations, IMAO, the best metric to use is number of deaths per million. I also think you need to stick to Western European nations, the Anglosphere, and their auxiliaries in Asia such as Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore where you can have confidence in the numbers." - CDR Salamander

The Mercury program: Alan Shepard becomes the first American to travel into outer space aboard the Mercury-Redstone 3 rocket, topped by the single-seat capsule, christened 'Freedom 7,' to make a successful sub-orbital flight of 15 minutes.

The main scientific objective of project Mercury was to determine man's capabilities in a space environment and in those environments to which he will be subject upon going into and returning from space. During the flight, Shepard observed the Earth and tested the capsule's attitude control system, turning the capsule around to face its blunt heat shield forward for atmospheric re-entry.

The US reached its orbital goal on February 20, 1962, when John Glenn made three orbits around the Earth. Project Mercury ended in May 1963 after six manned launches and re-entries.

On to today's news

Britain and the United States begin negotiations on an ambitious post-Brexit free trade agreement
"Further rounds will take place approximately every six weeks with talks being conducted remotely until it is safe to travel again. At official level, the talks will be led by Oliver Griffiths at the Department for International Trade for the UK and Daniel Mullaney, the assistant US trade representative for Europe and the Middle East."
Git er done, baby!

Fed-up NYPD officers blast city officials over enforcement of distancing policy, say it must end
"Patrick Lynch, head of the Police Benevolent Association, blasted city leaders for providing officers with “nothing but vague guidelines and mixed messages” regarding enforcement of social distancing rules, “leaving the cops on the street corners to fend for ourselves.”"
I'm still searching for the peer reviewed, double-blind study which conclusively proved that '6 feet social distance' is the precise safe space VS 19 and half feet or six miles. Because science is demanded. If you know of such a study, please show me - because I'm from Missouri.

Hundreds gather at Massachusetts State House: ‘We’re tired of you acting like wanna-be dictators’
"Lockdown-weary residents were angry over the state’s stay-at-home order which Baker extended until May 18, keeping nonessential businesses closed and social distancing guidelines in effect. Baker also implemented a new order that goes into effect Wednesday requiring Massachusetts residents to wear masks in public."
What is the scientific basis for the definition of 'non-essential?' Asking for 49 million friends.

Were they wrong then, or are they wrong now?
March 3: CDC says Americans shouldn’t wear face masks to prevent coronavirus
May 5: Karen mask shames those not wearing one.

San Francisco Police Chief says officers can’t wear thin blue line masks
"Many groups, including Black Lives Matter, have spoken out against the officers’ masks."
Translation: Black Lies Matter mask shames those who do wear one.

Whopping 373 workers at Missouri meatpacking plant test positive for COVID-19 — and were all asymptomatic
I think that's why it's called herd immunity. (no pun)
"Employees who tested positive for the virus, symptomatic or not, will remain at home in self-isolation, and will continue to receive pay.

The News-Press reports that Triumph Foods is just one of several COVID-19 outbreaks in meatpacking plants across the Midwest and elsewhere across the United States."
'Cases reported' is specious metric without numbers of hospitalized or dead from the virus, and only serves to make sensational headlines. Stop it. 'Testing' is not a magic panacea.

Parents don’t love their children unconditionally - if they won’t let them change genders
Said some childless, self-confessed homosexual woman who probably gets angry when the childless, self-confessed celibate Pope speaks on issues of sexuality.

The Gates of Hell will not triumph

Black faculty, administrators outraged at hiring of white woman as Michigan State U. provost
"Woodruff beat out Rutgers’ Wanda Blanchett and the University of Houston’s Antonio Tillis, both of whom are black and specialize in race issues. Foster noted the two runners up also have experience as “healers,” while Woodruff “only has experience working with white women.”"
To quote Insty, "Why is Higher Edu. such a cesspit of racism and intolerance?

FEC: ‘Committee to Draft Michelle Obama’ for vice president formed
I've been predicting for more than a year that the whole DNC potus primary process is simply a magician's trick to distract until the Hillary / Michelle 2020 ticket can parachute into the middle of the DNC nomination.
