I'm a little late on this one. Cartoonist Ted Key died the weekend before last.
He died Saturday at his home in the Philadelphia suburb of Tredyffrin Township after a 1½-year battle with cancer, his son Peter Key said Monday. Some of his more popular creations are pictured here, with 'Hazel' probably being the most famous. Mr. Peabody and Sherman are well-known to any boomer growing up on Saturday morning cartoons - before those things became violent, soft-core, agitprop tools.
He (also) created cartoon panels called Diz and Liz and Jack and Jill for children's magazines and produced a number of other animated animal characters. He also wrote a play for radio, authored and illustrated books, and had freelance cartoons appear in Cosmopolitan, Better Homes and Gardens and Sports Illustrated. Thanks for the laughs, Ted. Rest in peace.
