Odd, that in hyper-secularized modern France such concern should be shown for an ancient Catholic cathedral. It's little more than a landmark museum to many. Notre-Dame stood by the Seine for 800 years, survived medieval wars, bloody revolution, and two world wars, yet a massive renovation 'accident' can all but destroy it. There's a metaphor for the decline of Europe in there some where.
