FDA issues emergency authorization of anti-malaria drug for coronavirus care

That's the title of an opinion piece published yesterday by the far-left Politico, and they just can't help but be petulant children while people suffer.
"The Food and Drug Administration on Sunday issued an emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, decades-old malaria drugs championed by President Donald Trump for coronavirus treatment despite scant evidence."
Scant evidence.

From March 19: FDA to Study Hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19
"The drug is currently approved for malaria and also for rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, which is its main use in the U.S. It's therefore available to be prescribed off-label, and some clinicians have already said they're using it on COVID-19 patients. But neither (FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn, MD) nor other task force members addressed whether enough hydroxychloroquine is on hand to treat large numbers of coronavirus cases."
From the CDC on March 21: Hydroxychloroquine and Therapeutic Options for COVID-19 Patients
"(Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine) drugs have in-vitro activity against SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, and other coronaviruses, with hydroxychloroquine having relatively higher potency against SARS-CoV-2. A study in China reported that chloroquine treatment of COVID-19 patients had clinical and virologic benefit versus a comparison group, and chloroquine was added as a recommended antiviral for treatment of COVID-19 in China. Based upon limited in-vitro and anecdotal data, chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine are currently recommended for treatment of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in several countries."
I'm dubious as to anything out of China. Just sayin', but it's still worth monitoring.

From March 23: Malaria Drug and Antibiotic Combo May Work Against COVID-19, But Experts Warn Caution and Skepticism
"On March 17, the University of Minnesota initiated a clinical trial of hydroxychloroquine for treatment of COVID-19.

French researchers have published an article in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents describing the potential use of a combination of hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin, which is better known as Z-Pak. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is also evaluating the drugs but have not yet made recommendations."
The French research concluded: "Despite its small sample size our survey shows that hydroxychloroquine treatment is significantly associated with viral load reduction/disappearance in COVID-19 patients and its effect is reinforced by azithromycin."

From March 24: Hydroxychloroquine Post Exposure Prophylaxis for Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)
"Hydroxychloroquine (brand name, Plaquenil), an inexpensive anti-malarial medication with immunomodulatory effects, is a promising therapy for COVID-19. Chloroquine, a related compound with a less favorable toxicity profile, has shown benefit in clinical studies conducted in approximately one-hundred SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. In vitro, hydroxychloroquine has been recently shown to have greater efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 versus chloroquine.

Currently, there is no established post-exposure prophylaxis for persons at high risk of developing COVID-19. Hydroxychloroquine (brand name, Plaquenil), is a medicine that has been found to be effective against the novel coronavirus in some recent experiments. Previously, hydroxychloquine has been safety used to prevent malaria or to treat autoimmune diseases."
From March 25: NY Doctor treated 350 coronavirus patients with 100% success using Hydroxychloroquine Sulfate
"In a video posted on YouTube, Dr. Vladimir Zelenko, a board-certified family practitioner in New York, said he saw the symptom of shortness of breath resolved within four to six hours."
And finally, the opinion piece published yesterday by the far-left Politico: FDA issues emergency authorization of anti-malaria drug for coronavirus care.

'Scant evidence.' Draw your own conclusions.
