Morning Coffee - 'Virus war': dance routines, empty beds and layoffs

"A human being must have occupation if he or she is not to become a nuisance to the world." - Dorothy L. Sayers (1893 - 1957)

*April 28, 1994: Former-CIA officer turned KGB double agent, Aldrich Ames, and his wife, Rosario Ames, both plead guilty to espionage against the USA.

Following guilty pleas by both Ames and his wife, Ames was sentenced to incarceration for life without the possibility of parole. Rosario Ames was sentenced on October 20, 1994 to 63 months in prison.

Ames was formerly a 31-year CIA counterintelligence officer who committed espionage against the U.S. by spying for the Soviet Union and Russia. At the time of his arrest, Ames had compromised highly classified CIA assets - including identities of CIA and FBI human sources, some of whom were executed by USSR authorities - more than any other officer in history until Robert Hanssen's arrest seven years later in 2001.

On to today's news

Coronavirus: Hospitals Across Nation Lay Off Tens Of Thousands Of Healthcare Workers
"“Governors in dozens of states have delivered executive orders or guidelines directing hospitals to stop nonurgent procedures and surgeries to various degrees,” The New York Times noted. “Last month, the United States surgeon general, Dr. Jerome M. Adams, also implored hospitals to halt elective procedures.”

The massive decline in revenue, however, has resulted in at least 42,000 healthcare workers filing for unemployment, Department of Labor numbers revealed last week."
This whole 'war time' sure looks a lot like 'choreograph numerous silly dance routines for Tic Toc videos.'

Yes, I know. They're heroes on the front line of this war. I have nieces who are nurses, and a friend who's an E.R. doc on the front line. Bravo, and everyone needs to blow off steam, but when social media is littered with choreographed dance routines from the 'front line' in light of tens of thousands of these vital healthcare workers losing their jobs, you. are. doing. war. wrong.

Early April: Washington State Returns Unused Army Hospital As COVID-19 Curve Flattens
"One problem was the plan for the Army hospital to take only patients without COVID-19, which was supposed to free up beds in civilian hospitals for those who did have the disease. But civilian hospitals in the Seattle area have canceled so many elective procedures that bed space is no longer an urgent problem. And Sauer says that in the end, not a single patient was transferred to the field hospital."
Gee. How could that over-estimate have occurred?

Tell me again why we listen to 'experts?'

Fact check: Hospitals get paid more if patients listed as COVID-19, on ventilators
"Jensen said, "Hospital administrators might well want to see COVID-19 attached to a discharge summary or a death certificate. Why? Because if it's a straightforward, garden-variety pneumonia that a person is admitted to the hospital for – if they're Medicare – typically, the diagnosis-related group lump sum payment would be $5,000. But if it's COVID-19 pneumonia, then it's $13,000, and if that COVID-19 pneumonia patient ends up on a ventilator, it goes up to $39,000."
And no one would ever juice the numbers at the gynormous government pork-u-lous trough.

What the flip does that mean? Exactly what you think it means.

We're being scammed, people.

Dallas man sentenced to 18 months in prison for threatening to kill president
"Police say that when he was taken into custody during his signage-shenanigans, he was screaming “kill the president” (Trump was scheduled to arrive for a fundraiser at that location).
The convicted man had a social media feed littered with such thoughtful beatitudes like, “I’m a racist. I hate all white people. Thanks Trump.” Once again, TDS is a heck of a drug...

(DNC) Chairman Tom Perez said in December 2017 that any candidate or elected official ‘who has engaged in sexual misconduct’ should ‘step aside.’
"Former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, now stands accused of sexual assault by his former Senate staffer, Tara Reade."
Not gonna happen. Those judgments only apply to Republicans.
