I'm not Never Trump. I was a Ted Cruz(R) supporter during the 2016 primary. Trump was a political unknown to most; never elected any public office before 2016. There was no paper trail and no detectable political ideology in the man; just pure id and spectacle.
Trump came across as a rude, crude, loud-mouth lout. 'Obstreperous' is the ten dollar word. A liberal New York real estate mogul, living an indulgent lifestyle, who hung out with liberal New York politicians. Why would I expect him to govern any different?
After Trump and his pal Steve Bannon kicked in the teeth and the door to the Republican Party to become the GOP nominee, I was done. I voted 3rd party.
But Trump was duly elected in 2016. Unexpectedly, yet duly, nonetheless. He became POTUS. The Never Trump dictate was made mute and absurd - despite the revenge of the swamp creature and its army of special
In the two plus years Trump has been in office, I've been pleasantly surprised. He's accomplished some very good things, IMHO - and some not so good things. I won't go into all the nuts n bolts, but the best of all is that Hillary Clinton(D) is still not potus.
Plus, the bonus level unlocked yesterday when Hillary announced she's not running for potus 2020 (I think Hillary is lying, still & again, but there it is).
So, Andrew Klavan asks, "What Do Never Trumpers Want?" Klavan doesn't delve into the nuts n bolts of policy wonk analysis, either, but instead does what he does best: cultural perspective. Where are we as a nation in the era of Trump, and what's the alternative?
I think his premise is based on what I call 'danger zone morality,' yet Klavan is far more witty and talented than I could ever write. "What Do Never Trumpers Want?"
