A little something for my Dad.
MyBook? FaceSpace?
Wait...
Facebook. I tried. I really did. Honest. But it sucks. Major suckage.
Insidious. Like a swarm of bugs. Yet many places I traveled through the inter-tubes required a Facebook account - in order to comment on a blog. Supwitdat?? So signed up. Branch out, I said. Try new things. Call me pragmatic.
But for months, there it sat. My Facebook page, yet it was my log-in key to troll, er... illuminate other blog worlds with my erudite ruminations.
Then I decides to post stuff on my Facebook page. No, I don't have some weepy Sally Fields "you really like me" fetish. And I don't care to be your tangentially obscure inter-tube 'friend', either.
I simply tried to blog on Facebook. Big mistake, like trying to shoot pool with a rope: you can't edit posts; resize images; embed video; free form html of any sort; etc.
In short, Facebook sucks. Give me a backwater blog with wide margins and too many tools I don't know how to use, any day! - LB1901
Update: I'll attempt to transmigrate some of my erudite Facebook ruminations over here shortly. And for the dedicated reader of this blog (thanx, Mom!), I'll attempt to start blogging again. Stay tuned, citizens. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

"Organizing For America held a rally in support of Obama's Health Control Bill tonight at the IBEW Hall in St. Louis. (Of course, it was at the union hall.) The IBEW Rally is part of a bus tour organized by OFA, which will hit 12 major cities/states, one of which was St. Louis."
Dr. Zero posts his Disagreement With the Kennedy Narrative.
"I don’t think a man who lied to the police, and dispatched henchmen to destroy the reputation of the victim, to help his nephew beat sexual assault charges is any sort of feminist hero. Let me know when the feminists think it’s okay for a Republican to be one of the slices of bread in a waitress sandwich. The idea that political positions convey a supreme virtue, trumping abhorrent personal behavior, should be buried with Kennedy.I disagree that someone’s party affiliation, position in the government, or last name should put them above the law. I disagree that four decades of squatting in a safe Senate seat is admirable, for anyone of any political party. I don’t see anything to applaud about a notorious womanizer with a spotless record of abortion extremism. I don’t find anything noble about a man born to wealth and privilege seeking moral authority by socking struggling middle-class businessmen with the bill for his high-minded social programs… especially when he took every opportunity to shelter his own income from taxes."
Politics and Blacks by the erudite Dr. Walter E. Williams.
"Most of the major problems that many black people face are not amendable to political solutions and government anti-poverty programs. Let's look at some. In 1940, 86 percent of black children were born inside marriage, and the illegitimacy rate among blacks was about 15 percent. Today, only 35 percent of black children are born inside marriage, and the illegitimacy rate hovers around 70 percent.
Today's breakdown of the black family is unprecedented. It began in the 1960s with the War on Poverty and the harebrained ideas of the welfare state. In the mid-1960s, Daniel Moynihan sounded the alarm about the breakdown in the black family in his book "The Negro Family: The Case for National Action." At that time black illegitimacy was 26 percent. Moynihan said, "(A)t the heart of the deterioration of the fabric of the Negro society is the deterioration of the Negro family." He added, "The steady expansion of welfare programs can be taken as a measure of the steady disintegration of the Negro family structure over the past generation in the United States." Moynihan's observations were greeted with charges of racism and blaming the victim.
By the way, the welfare state is an equal opportunity family destroyer. Today's illegitimacy rate among whites, at nearly 30 percent, is higher than it was among blacks in the 1960s when Moynihan sounded the alarm. In Sweden, the mother of the welfare state, illegitimacy is 54 percent."

"I'd like to see Barack Obama melt like a snail tonight," Anderson said in the sermon, referencing the practice of pouring salt on slugs. "He ought to be aborted."
An expert on CNN said Secret Service agents had likely visited Anderson because of the content of his sermons.
Anderson, who ministers at Faithful Word Baptist Church, did not return a call or e-mail for comment."

Behemoths Born of the Bailout Reduce Consumer Choice, Tempt Corporate Moral Hazard.
"To favor one class of financial institutions over another class skews the market. You don't have a free market; you have a government-favored market," (Camden Fine, president of the Independent Community Bankers of America) said. "We will never have free markets again if you have the government picking winners and losers...
The federal bailouts only reinforced the thought that government would save big banks, no matter how horrible their decisions."
"So far, 81 banks have failed this year, including 45 in the second quarter. That, in turn, has put enormous stress on the government’s deposit insurance fund, which is supported by fees charged to the banks regulated by the F.D.I.C. Its second-quarter reserve of $10.4 billion compares with $45.2 billion a year earlier.
Most of the decline comes from money that the agency has set aside to cover the cost of bank failures, and Ms. Bair said the fund had ample resources to cover all insured depositors.
But the levels are so low that F.D.I.C. officials said Thursday that they would consider imposing a special assessment on the banks, on top of elevated insurance fees, toward the end of the third quarter. Through similar actions, it added about $9.1 billion. It also will begin to recover some money by selling the assets of banks that it seized."

California Resorts to Statewide Rummage Sale to Ease Deficit.
"State officials estimate the giant two-day yard sale being held at a state warehouse will bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars. In addition to clearing out office products, the state is also selling unclaimed property from state parks and items confiscated by law enforcement, said California Department of General Services spokesman Eric Lamoureux."
Barney Frank says Ron Paul bill will pass.
"Rep. Paul's, Texas Republican, bill if added to Mr. Frank's other proposed reforms could give a boost to a financial regulation package the Obama Administration wanted to pass last spring. The Fed bill has 282 co-sponsors, including every Republican member of the House and a considerable number of Democrats.
The Senate's lead sponsor of the bill is Sen. Bernard Sanders, a Vermont independent and self-described socialist.
Today, the Government Accountability Office has no power to audit the Federal Reserve. Mr. Paul's bill would empower the government watchdog to do so and make their findings available to the public."
"During a period of less than four months in the summer and fall of 1969, eight bombings rocked major institutions in New York City. While no one was killed, the bombings caused several injuries, jolted the city, damaged property and became symbols of the radical movements that were challenging the foundations of American society."
“It’s the nature of young people,” he said. “They will always be inspired by people of intense principles. The bombers represent the extreme edge of the commitment. They will for a long time be regarded for their generational mobilization. It’s impressive to most people.”
"In place of the variety of products that competition would generate, we would be forced "choose" among virtually identical insurance plans. Government would define these plans down to the last detail. Every one would have at least the same "basic" coverage, including physical exams, maternity benefits, well-baby care, alcoholism treatment and mental-health services. Consumers could not buy a cheap, high-deductible catastrophic policy. Every insurance company would have to use an identical government-designed pricing structure. Prices would be the same for sick and healthy.
In this respect, it wouldn't matter whether or not Congress created a "public option," a government insurance plan. In either case, bureaucrats would dictate virtually every aspect of the health-insurance business."
"In a very telling news release, the Transportation Department revealed that the Ford Explorer topped the list of most traded-in clunkers, while the Toyota Corolla was the most popular car purchased through the program, followed by the Honda Civic.
The top 10 traded-in vehicles were American brands and 8 of the top 10 purchased vehicles were foreign brands."
"Beginning late this fall, the program authorizes rebates of $50 to $200 for purchases of high-efficiency household appliances. The money is part of the broader economic stimulus bill passed earlier this year. Program details will vary by state, and the Energy Dept. has set a deadline of Oct. 15 for states to file formal applications. The Energy Dept. expects the bulk of the $300 million to be awarded by the end of November. (Unlike the clunkers auto program, consumers won't have to trade in their old appliances.)"

He died at his home in Hyannis Port last night after a year long battle with brain cancer.
Our condolences to his family.
Gub'mint supplied, single payer health care was Ted's life long political passion. Simply put, he wanted Medicare for everyone. Exactly what he didn't choose for his own treatment for brain cancer:
Just weeks after his diagnosis, Kennedy tapped the vast array of health care specialists he’s come to know through his Senate service or personal experiences to convene an extraordinary brainstorming session about his own treatment.
According to a New York Times account, Kennedy summoned more than a dozen experts from at least six academic centers, some of whom flew to Boston while others joined in by telephone. The upshot of the meeting appears to be a vigorous, proactive shift in his treatment.
His Massachusetts doctors initially said he’d receive radiation and chemotherapy to combat the tumor. But, after the Boston consultation session, he wound up flying to Duke University Medical Center, another top brain cancer center, to undergo complex and risky surgery to remove parts of the tumor. The surgery was done by Dr. Allan H. Friedman, a renowned leader in the field.
Since then, he’s undergone proton-beam radiation at Massachusetts General Hospital and multiple rounds of chemotherapy, he said in his Newsweek account. The senator offered no insight into the pharmaceuticals he is taking — though cancer drugs are some of the most expensive in medicine, some of which can cost as much as $50,000 a dose, according to medical reports.
Kennedy’s care is being paid for by his Senate health insurance policy and his own money, according to his essay.

Apparently, the state is having a budget crisis.
Its Governor maybe a Republican, but the state legislature is Democrat controlled, both U.S. Congressional Reps are Democrats, both U.S. Senators are Democrats, and Rhode Island has some of the highest taxes in the country, particularly its property taxes, ranking seventh in local and state taxes, and sixth in real estate taxes.
Of course, that has nothing to do with Rhode Island's current business crushing, lack of tax revenue problems. Just ask any Democrat.
Naturally, none of this stuff happens rapidly or in a vacuum, as witnessed by the Governor's call for drastic action back in November 2008 when Rhode Island's unemployment rate was the highest in the country, at 8.8 percent, just ahead of Michigan's, and the state lost close to 16,000 payroll jobs since the first quarter of 2007.
But, judging from the current action, my guess is the Republican governor didn't get much cooperation from the Democratic legislature.

Obama’s Team Is Lacking Most of Its Top Players.
"Of more than 500 senior policymaking positions requiring Senate confirmation, just 43 percent have been filled — a reflection of a White House that grew more cautious after several nominations blew up last spring, a Senate that is intensively investigating nominees and a legislative agenda that has consumed both.
While career employees or holdovers fill many posts on a temporary basis, Mr. Obama does not have his own people enacting programs central to his mission. He is trying to fix the financial markets but does not have an assistant treasury secretary for financial markets. He is spending more money on transportation than anyone since Dwight D. Eisenhower but does not have his own inspector general watching how the dollars are used. He is fighting two wars but does not have an Army secretary.
He sent Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to Africa to talk about international development but does not have anyone running the Agency for International Development. He has invited major powers to a summit on nuclear nonproliferation but does not have an assistant secretary of state for nonproliferation.

Limousine liberal Daschle’s tax evasions were the least of his problems. Tom Daschle is the personification of all that Obama professed to detest during his campaign of Hope and Change— – a consummate Beltway insider who parlayed his public service (where he earned a $158,000 yearly salary) into a $5.2 million personal fortune as one of Washington’s biggest influence peddlers along with his lobbyist wife."
"According to intelligence officials, Panetta erupted in a tirade last month during a meeting with a senior White House staff member. Panetta was reportedly upset over plans by Attorney General Eric Holder to open a criminal investigation of allegations that CIA officers broke the law in carrying out certain interrogation techniques that President Obama has termed "torture."
A CIA spokesman quoted Panetta as saying "it is absolutely untrue" that he has any plans to leave the CIA. As to the reported White House tirade, the spokesman said Panetta is known to use "salty language." CIA spokesman George Little said the report was "wrong, inaccurate, bogus and false."

"The deadline will give car dealers and buyers time to complete purchases and apply for rebates from the remainder of the $3 billion provided by Congress, the department said. Dealers have complained of difficulty running their businesses while awaiting program payments, and the agency said it’s adding workers to help process claims faster.
“Obviously there was a lot more latent demand than many thought,” said Michael Robinet, an analyst at CSM Worldwide Inc. in Northville, Michigan. “That bodes well for the market. But we are past the honeymoon now and we have to see what the market looks like in the post-clunker environment.”
Applications for rebates won’t be accepted after 8 p.m. New York time on Aug. 24, the agency said.
The Transportation Department said it has handled 167,000, or 37 percent, of the 457,476 dealer requests submitted. The agency didn’t say how many of the processed transactions have been paid out and how many were rejected or sent back for further information.
Some $145 million, or less than 8 percent, has been paid out so far to dealers, a senior administration official said on a call with reporters yesterday.
Wind-Down Plan
Officials from the National Automobile Dealers Association trade group met two days ago with the Transportation Department to discuss concerns that payment delays add to the burden on retailers of trying to recover from a sales slump. The association also urged the agency to outline a plan to wind down the effort so retailers know when to stop accepting trade-ins.
Representative Joe Sestak, a Pennsylvania Democrat, said last week the effort had paid retailers for only 2 percent of their claims.
The program is formally known as the Car Allowance Rebate System, or CARS.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, asked Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in a letter yesterday to speed up payments, saying “dealers have been forced to effectively finance the CARS vouchers for buyers until the dealers are reimbursed by the federal government, placing a strain on dealers’ balance sheets that, if prolonged, could eventually offset some of the benefits of the program.”
"Obviously there was a lot more latent demand than many thought...??" Well, of course, when one is stealing from our grandchildren and passing out the cash to incentivize debt for instant gratification."Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, asked HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in a letter yesterday to speed up payments, saying “hospitals have been forced to effectively finance medical procedure vouchers for patients until the hospitals are reimbursed by the federal government, placing a strain on hospitals’ balance sheets that, if prolonged, could eventually contribute to the deaths of patients."

"Gov. Hearnes died shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 16, 2009) surrounded by family. He had been in declining health for about two years and was injured in a fall a few months ago. "We were all with him holding his hands," said Lynn Hearnes of Clayton, one of his three daughters.
Gov. Hearnes held elective office in Missouri for 22 years, as governor, secretary of state and state representative from his native Charleston. He was the state's first governor to serve two full consecutive terms, from 1965 to 1973. He was a candidate for U.S. Senate in 1976 and for state auditor in 1978, and later served briefly as a circuit court judge."

"To be actually useful, of course, the Hot Waitress Index must be a leading indicator, and there is good reason to believe that it is. Employment is generally thought to lag behind economic recovery, which is to say that jobless rates remain elevated, and even climb, after a recession has technically ended. But hotness occupies a privileged place in the employment picture. As a commodity that’s fairly cheap, historically effective as a marketing tool, and available on a freelance basis, hotness will likely be back in demand long before your average Michigan autoworker is. Or the rest of us, for that matter."

"At one time, it would have been none of Dr. Emanuel's business if your physician prescribed the latest medications for you, rather than the cheaper and obsolete medications they replaced. It would have been none of his business if you preferred to have a nice hospital room with "amenities" rather than being in an unsanitary ward with inadequate nursing care, as under the National Health Service in Britain.
The involvement of government gives Dr. Emanuel the leverage to condemn other Americans' choices-- and a larger involvement of government will give him the power to force both doctors and patients to change their choices."
The White House is deploying an array of tactics to promote ObamaCare. Here's the list to date.
Published in that dead tree rag of a mouth organ for the democratic party, in its continued race to the bottom.
"However, and again despite Barack Obama’s rhetoric to the contrary (”But let’s make sure that we talk with one another, and not over one another.“), this op/ed is an attempt to talk over the opposition, not with it. And it is beginning of an attempt by the left to ramp up an effort to talk over the townhall protesters and lessen their obvious impact which has been negative for the administration. Again, if you don’t believe that, simply read where Obama contradicts his high sounding rhetoric by doing precisely what he condemns:"

Opaque, corrupt, and clueless in D.C. All this from an avowed Obamatron:
"But who would have thought that the sober, deliberative Barack Obama would have nothing to propose but vague and slippery promises -- or that he would so easily cede the leadership clout of the executive branch to a chaotic, rapacious, solipsistic Congress? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whom I used to admire for her smooth aplomb under pressure, has clearly gone off the deep end with her bizarre rants about legitimate town-hall protests by American citizens. She is doing grievous damage to the party and should immediately step down.
There is plenty of blame to go around. Obama's aggressive endorsement of a healthcare plan that does not even exist yet, except in five competing, fluctuating drafts, makes Washington seem like Cloud Cuckoo Land. The president is promoting the most colossal, brazen bait-and-switch operation since the Bush administration snookered the country into invading Iraq with apocalyptic visions of mushroom clouds over American cities.
You can keep your doctor; you can keep your insurance, if you're happy with it, Obama keeps assuring us in soothing, lullaby tones. Oh, really? And what if my doctor is not the one appointed by the new government medical boards for ruling on my access to tests and specialists? And what if my insurance company goes belly up because of undercutting by its government-bankrolled competitor? Face it: Virtually all nationalized health systems, neither nourished nor updated by profit-driven private investment, eventually lead to rationing.
I just don't get it. Why the insane rush to pass a bill, any bill, in three weeks? And why such an abject failure by the Obama administration to present the issues to the public in a rational, detailed, informational way? The U.S. is gigantic; many of our states are bigger than whole European nations. The bureaucracy required to institute and manage a nationalized health system here would be Byzantine beyond belief and would vampirically absorb whatever savings Obama thinks could be made. And the transition period would be a nightmare of red tape and mammoth screw-ups, which we can ill afford with a faltering economy.
As with the massive boondoggle of the stimulus package, which Obama foolishly let Congress turn into a pork rut, too much has been attempted all at once; focused, targeted initiatives would, instead, have won wide public support. How is it possible that Democrats, through their own clumsiness and arrogance, have sabotaged healthcare reform yet again? Blaming obstructionist Republicans is nonsensical because Democrats control all three branches of government. It isn't conservative rumors or lies that are stopping healthcare legislation; it's the justifiable alarm of an electorate that has been cut out of the loop and is watching its representatives construct a tangled labyrinth for others but not for themselves. No, the airheads of Congress will keep their own plush healthcare plan -- it's the rest of us guinea pigs who will be thrown to the wolves."
Progressive dissonance at its finest.
During the last election, Hillary's townhall 'potted plants' were a great embarrassment to her campaign, and the Obamatron media reported it with glee.
Pres. Obama's scripted press conferences in the East Wing have been little more than political theatre, but the sycophant media virtually ignores that lil nugget.
We now have the 'Obamacare arm twisting dis-information tour' which continues the theatre meme:
"Little Julia Hall is just the latest in-the-tank questioner with Obama campaign/Democrat ties to turn up “randomly” at presidential health care forums.
Here’s your illustrated guide to Obamacare human props."
The once golden, and now bankrupt, state issues payment to businesses which provided services with worthless IOUs, then demands the businesses pay taxes on those payments.

But at least, it's a 'progressive' state.
"Members of Congress have said that ten months into the Troubled Asset Relief Program or TARP, the oversight of the money has been lacking so much so that it is worthless.
"TARP has become a program in which taxpayers are not being told what most of the TARP recipients are doing with their money, have still not been told how much their substantial investments are worth, and will not be told the full details of how their money is being invested," a special inspector general over the program reported last month. The "very credibility" of the program is at stake, it said."
"Tax receipts declined by 17% in July, but spending went up by 21%. Shouldn’t spending decrease when less money gets received? For American families, that’s certainly how it works. At the very least, one would expect Congress to hold the line on spending and stop any increases when it expects less revenue. That would be the fiscally responsible path to take in an economic crisis."
Dateline: Kansas City, Kansas??!
"All signs seem to indicate this will be a truly bountiful year for hearts and small intestines," said third-generation heart surgeon Dr. Thomas Menard, who presides over a five-acre hospital outside Lawrence, KS. "If these intermittent rain showers are sustained through the high-school prom and graduation months, we're likely to see a windfall of perennial car crashes."
"I've already got a large number of vegetables in the intensive-care unit that could be ready for harvesting in as little as two weeks," Menard added. "It's a really good yield this year."
"Where your treasure is, there will be your heart."
Since 1990, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has donated more than $27,500,000 to politicians. $26,300,455 has gone to democrat politicians.
The union has affiliations with the corrupt, and sometimes violent, tax payer funded ACORN:
"ACORN is the lead player in Health Care for America Now (HCAN), which is pressing Congress to enact President Obama's ambitious health redistribution scheme.
ACORN is also listed as a "partner" in the Apollo Alliance, along with SEIU, and Center for American Progress president John Podesta. The "green jobs" group has significant pull in Congress and helped to write the February stimulus bill. It is a major player in the debate over economy-crippling cap-and-trade legislation. "
Prairie-Fire Anger by Victor Davis Hanson:
"Voters are beginning to sense a certain edge to the Obama revolution, a meanness in its class-driven rhetoric aimed at the more successful. Even the middling classes do not necessary like this constant bashing of their bosses and lawyers, doctors, dentists, contractors, brokers, and real estate agents. The constant harangue about taxing only those who make over $250,000 (or is it now $200,000?, or $150,000) accentuates the notion that those who run successful businesses, who create profitable medical practices, and who are accomplished professionals are somehow culpable—greedy, conniving, or worse.
If well over 40% of the population pays no federal income tax, and the demonized 1% pay more federal income tax than does the bottom 95%, and still we are to hear whining about Bush-era greed, what is next? What does the Left ultimately want—confiscation of 90% of all income? Tax exemptions for 99% of the electorate? Continual Barney Frank show-trial congressional hearings to grandstand the bullying of the now satanic CEOs and investors?"
