******Sticky note until further notice.

MyBook? FaceSpace? Wait... Facebook. I tried. I really did. Honest. But it sucks. Major suckage. Insidious. Like a swarm of bugs. Yet many places I traveled through the inter-tubes required a Facebook account - in order to comment on a blog. Supwitdat?? So signed up. Branch out, I said. Try new things. Call me pragmatic. But for months, there it sat. My Facebook page, yet it was my log-in key to troll, er... illuminate other blog worlds with my erudite ruminations. Then I decides to post stuff on my Facebook page. No, I don't have some weepy Sally Fields "you really like me" fetish. And I don't care to be your tangentially obscure inter-tube 'friend', either. I simply tried to blog on Facebook. Big mistake, like trying to shoot pool with a rope: you can't edit posts; resize images; embed video; free form html of any sort; etc.

In short, Facebook sucks. Give me a backwater blog with wide margins and too many tools I don't know how to use, any day! - LB1901

Update: I'll attempt to transmigrate some of my erudite Facebook ruminations over here shortly. And for the dedicated reader of this blog (thanx, Mom!), I'll attempt to start blogging again. Stay tuned, citizens. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

Detour

"Bill paused again. And then our phone call turned very weird. “Actually, that’s why I’m calling,” Bill continued. “I’ve been praying, Rich. And, um, the thing is, God told me you’re going to be the next president of World Vision.”

For a moment I was speechless. My eyes darted around my office. I was CEO of Lenox, one of the world’s largest makers of fine china. I sat behind an imposing cherry wood desk at our headquarters near Princeton, New Jersey, surrounded by oil paintings and cabinets lined with elegant plates and teacups. A fountain splashed in a pond outside. A door led to my private bathroom. “You must be joking,” I said to Bill.

Bill insisted he wasn’t. “I know it sounds crazy,” he said, “but I’m certain God spoke to me.” He told me where to send my résumé.

“Bill!” I finally barked. “I’m not sending my résumé anywhere. I like my job. I don’t know anything about international—whatever it is World Vision does. I’m not qualified, I’m not interested and I’m not available.”

Bill was silent a moment. “Rich, you’re not listening to God’s plan.”

Huh? That was almost rude! A few awkward moments later we hung up."

What Darwin Got Wrong

"I'm looking forward to reading this book because I believe that unlike the intelligent design people, Fodor and Piatelli-Palmarini are looking in the correct place for proving the model incorrect in a scientific manner, assuming that it is actually incorrect.

As I have pointed out on numerous occasions, the natural selection component of TENS is a logical and philosophical hypothesis, not a scientific one. Even Richard Dawkins has reluctantly admitted in his latest book that it is entirely plausible natural selection is not the mechanism by which evolution operates, and since after 150 years there is still no significant scientific evidence that Darwinian natural selection takes place, I expect that it will not be too terribly long before Darwinism takes its rightful place with phrenology, astrology, and other pseudo-sciences."

Guerrilla Art Spotted in Eastern Jackson County Missouri.

Oh noes!

The left-hand text box reads, "I don't want the world"; while the right-hand text box rejoinder reads, "I just want your half." The woman appears to be holding a handgun.

I saw this on my travels, a couple of miles from my house. While not as ubiquitous as the infamous 'obama joker poster' or 'acorn funded prostitution zone' guerrilla art from last year, I think the natives are definitely restless and are attempting to communicate.

But what's up with the flag of the rising sun??

Regulation for Thee, But not For Me

More than 70 percent of congressional offices violate OSHA safety standards.

"In the past, we’ve found serious fire hazards such as blocked sprinkler heads, stacks of paper on heaters, fire doors obstructed by furniture and outlets with exposed live wires,” said Peter Ames Eveleth, general counsel of the Office of Compliance.

“We are talking about serious hazards that have plagued congressional offices for years.”

Of the 541 offices in Congress, 154 were found to be completely in compliance with OSHA standards — those of 64 senators and 90 House lawmakers — leaving 387 offices that had at least one violation. This is a marked increase from 2008, when only 37 offices were found to be in complete accordance, or in 2006, when only seven offices were in compliance."

And Now for Something Completely Different - A Few facts

From the Hoover Institute:

"Medical care in the United States is derided as miserable compared to health care systems in the rest of the developed world. Economists, government officials, insurers, and academics beat the drum for a far larger government role in health care. Much of the public assumes that their arguments are sound because the calls for change are so ubiquitous and the topic so complex. Before we turn to government as the solution, however, we should consider some unheralded facts about America’s health care system."

Ten reasons why America’s health care system is in better condition than you might suppose.

And despite a virtual media blackout, Republicans have proposed 30 health care reform bills.
"Another Republican bill, H.R. 2520, the Patients' Choice Act, by Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, received 12 mentions in the same time period. And two other bills, H.R. 3217 and H.R. 3218, the Health Care Choice Act and the Improving Health Care for All Americans Act, by Rep. John Shadegg, together received 20 mentions.

The virtual embargo on reporting Republican legislation has allowed Democrats and their allies in the media to keep up the "Republicans have no plan" attack. Just hours after the president's speech, for example, the Democratic National Committee released a new commercial claiming that Republicans "refuse to offer a plan" to reform the health care system."

But recently, the best advertising for Republican reform bills, laughably & inadvertently, came from the White House itself.

Transsexual Blows Chunks All Over Susan Sarandon at Burlesque Club

And she paid him (it? her?) to do it. Something about "performance art."

Hey. When you're 63, you takes your kicks where youse finds 'em.

I'm not sure what's more disturbing; this blog stooping lower than it's already award-winning mediocrity to post this drivel, or someone willfully divesting themselves of money to observe some pathetic character throw up, under the guise of 'entertainment.'

Maybe that's the thrill: cash for chunks. Although, there's many who would vomit on Sarandon gratis.

From Ben Shapiro at BH:

"Boiled down to its essence, this is just elitist claptrap. Unfortunately, it’s taken seriously by the vast majority of New York and Los Angeles artists, who somehow think it’s cool to be the object of transsexual chunk-blowing.

I’m not a transsexual, obviously, but I’ll make Susan Sarandon and her ilk this offer: I’ll vomit on them at any time, anywhere, so long as they say the same thing – that it’s avant garde performance art worthy of praise. Seriously. I have a very strong gag reflex. Which is just one reason the left’s version of art is so unbelievably hard to stomach."

Here's Something You Don't See Everyday

Puppet cleavage banned from bus-stand ads in Colorado Springs.

Yes. You read that right. Puppet cleavage. (no woody jokes!)

"A Colorado Springs billboard company has rejected an ad for a touring show because it shows a puppet's cleavage.

The puppet's name is Lucy the Slut. She's a pink Sesame Street-like puppet in the touring Broadway show “Avenue Q.” "Avenue Q" is a Tony-winning musical about twenty-something New Yorkers, both human and puppets, searching for life and love."

That's a relief. I always wondered about the puppet demographic. But they actually deal with important matters in Colorado Springs, CO., too. Like city budgets and services and how liberals are wetting their nappies over the city turning off some street lights to save money.

But I thought it was a good thang to reduce one's carbon footprint? Or is that only when liberals aren't being hypocrites? I'm so confused.

CPAC Diversity Leaves Liberals Dazed & Confused

On Friday night, Ron Paul(R) won the Presidential Straw Poll at CPAC.

"Ron Paul has ended Mitt Romney's three-year run as conservatives' favorite for president, taking 31 percent of the vote in the Conservative Political Action Conference's annual straw poll.

Paul, a Republican congressman from Texas known for his libertarian views, ran for president in 2008 but was never a serious contender for the GOP nomination."

Romney, former Massachusetts governor and also a 2008 GOP candidate, has won the last three presidential straw polls at the annual conference. This year, he came in second, with 22 percent.

Sarah Palin, who didn't attend the conference, was a distant third in the straw poll, with 7 percent, followed by Tim Pawlenty, the Minnesota governor, and Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana."

For some odd reason, all of that has our liberal friends over at the oddly named "Think Progress" in a tizzy.

Last week, they pummeled the "Profit-Seeking Palin" for not attending CPAC. This week, the oddly named "Think Progress" liberals are in the midst of a full blown conniption fit over the "raging rift" and "lingering divisions" between the Libertarian Paul-ites and the Social Conservatives, like Mitt Romney.

I know you’re dazed & confused, liberals, but that’s not ‘lingering divisions’ or a ‘raging rift.’ That’s diversity.

Oddly enough, my comment in their thread over at the oddly named "Think Progress" wasn't tolerated too well, and was voted down. I'm heart broken.

5. Todd Phillips: $44 million
6. Daniel Radcliffe: $41 million
7. Ben Stiller: $40 million
8. Tom Hanks: $36 million
9. J.J. Abrams: $36 million
10. Jerry Bruckheimer: $35.5 million....

Tyler Perry, a Black man, (but another male) comes in at number eleven with $32.5 million bank, and number 13 is Denzel Washington (another Black male) at $31 million, but a wyman doesn't show up until number 14 with that petite lil $30 million Emma Watson.

Number 15, White male. Number 16, White male. Number 17, White male. Number 18, White male. Number 19, White female. Number 20, White male. Number 21, White male...

$3 / Gallon Gasoline Predicted by Summer Time

From a gratified, Gaia worshiping AP:

"On Monday, retail gas prices rose for the fifth straight day, adding less than a penny overnight to a new national average of $2.648 a gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service.

A gallon of regular unleaded is still cheaper than it was a month ago. It's also 73.1 cents more expensive than the same time last year.

Rozell said motorists shouldn't expect a return of the price spikes of 2008, when gasoline jumped above $4 a gallon in some parts of the country. Americans simply aren't burning enough fuel to push prices that high.

"I'll be surprised if it got over $3.25," he said.

Gasoline futures also jumped Monday to the highest price in more than a month as investors looked ahead to the summer driving season. Prices also were propped up by a festering refinery strike in France, where workers angry about the uncertain future of a Total SA plant have shut down over half of the country's refining capacity.

The standoff already has led to gasoline shortages in parts of the country, and it appears to be spreading.
Refinery workers at Exxon Mobil Corp.-owned Esso France are expected to join the walk out Tuesday, and workers at British-owned chemical company INEOS also plan to strike.

The dispute could affect U.S. supplies as well, since America imports gasoline from Europe. Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates, said it's unlikely that U.S. gas stations would experience any shortages, but the country's surplus may dip in coming weeks."

All the more reason to start domestic drilling and building domestic refineries. Seems to me that would cut our dependence on foreign oil.

VoteVets Ad Smears Congressman Roy Blunt(R), Et Al

The television ad equates Blunt's vote against the Clean Energy Act with supporting terrorism. The VoteVets' ad is narrated by James Sander, an Iraq war veteran from Columbia, Mo and shows a picture of Congressman Blunt superimposed over footage from the attack of the U.S.S. Cole in 2000.

You may recall VoteVets for their 2006 disinformation campaign about Congressional Republicans voting against body armor for our troops in Iraq. It wasn't true.

Fact Check dot Org debunked their disinformation and VoteVets has never retracted their spurious, hyper-partisan claims.

Their recent ad seeks to champion green technology as a way to "cut our dependence on foreign oil." But many economists & pundits predict the Clean Energy Act - otherwise known as "Cap n Tax" - would cause energy prices to soar and further cripple our nation's economy.

"VoteVets.org is an independent group with a supporter base of 100,000 veterans, their families and general supporters, said Jon Soltz, chairman of VoteVets.org and an Iraq war veteran. The group contends cap and trade legislation would lower America's dependency on foreign oil by investing billions in more "clean energy" sources, such as wind power, Soltz said.

"Our contention is until we undercut the value of oil on the market, our enemies are using oil profits to fight us," Soltz said.

Soltz said Blunt is doing the bidding of oil companies that want to remain the dominant supplier of American energy.

"Big Oil verses the troops, he chose Big Oil," Soltz said of Blunt.

VoteVets.org is spending $600,000 to air the 30-second ad across Missouri."

Too bad the wind doesn't blow all the time, except on television. Similar T.V. ads - as part of a nationwide $2 million ad campaign, equate support for "Big Oil" with support for terrorism - are also running in Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, South Dakota, Indiana and Wyoming targeting Republican senators who oppose the "Cap n Tax" legislation. Even Evan Bayh (D) was a target until he announced no plans to run again.
"As expected, the TV ad infuriated Blunt's campaign and the GOP, who accused VoteVets.org of working on Carnahan's behalf.

"The horrendous thing about this is to suggest that because you vote against a tax on the American people's electricity and energy needs that in some way you're supporting terrorism," said Lloyd Smith, executive director of the Missouri Republican Party."

Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, Blunt's likely Democratic opponent in the Senate race, called the ad "crazy and wrong." Thank you, Robin.

But what's really "crazy and wrong" is the blind faith in this unreliable, inefficient green technology that cannot yet replace the fuel for our homes, transportation and industries. Or is the "green revolution" supposed to transport us back to the dark ages?

How about proposing something a little more practical? Like drilling more domestic wells and building more domestic refineries, instead of the democrats simply being the "party of no."

Seems to me that would “cut our dependence on foreign oil.”

Story? What Story?

Every one claims to do something about the weather, but no one wants to talk about it. This was even out of Orwell's vision: the weather has been so politicized, it's the one topic many currently avoid.

"It’s been called the “biggest scientific scandal in history.” It has everything to earn Pulitzer consideration: lies and misconduct in high places, political implications, even massive financial transactions that may or may not be legitimate or even legal. It’s big news … as long as you read the Telegraph, the Guardian, the London Times, or even major Indian papers.

It’s no news at all if you read the U.S. mainstream media."

So, let's talk about the “biggest scientific scandal in history.” But how about a little less talk, and a lot more action? When do the criminal indictments start rolling out??

New Investigation Opened for Bolshevik Crimes & the Murder of Tsar Nicholas II

"Who cares?," one might ask. This woman and her family care, and so goes the World:

"Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna, who styles herself as the head of the Romanov imperial line, filed suit last month after prosecutors closed a probe into the murder of Russia's last tsar, Nicholas II, and his family, shot dead by the Bolsheviks in 1918.

The lawsuit is part of her protracted standoff with Russian prosecutors, who have closed the investigation for the second time on the grounds that too much time has elapsed since the killing.

The 56-year-old Maria Vladimirovna, who was born in Madrid and divides her time between France and Spain, believes a resumption of the criminal case is essential for Russia to come to terms with its blood-soaked Soviet past.

At the heart of her legal battle is a question that continues to divide Russians more than 90 years after the Romanov dynasty's downfall: should the slaying of Nicholas and his family be considered a common crime or an act of political persecution?"

"The death of one man is a tragedy; the death of a million is a statistic." - Joseph Stalin
"The first Romanov remains were recovered outside the Urals city of Yekaterinburg in 1991, following the Soviet collapse. A probe into the murder was opened in 1993, but was quietly suspended in 1997. The royal remains were buried a year later at a lavish ceremony in St. Petersburg's Peter and Paul Cathedral.

The investigation was reopened in 2007, after the discovery of two more bodies thought to be the remains of two of Nicholas's children.

Today, most Russians see the killing as part of a brutal campaign of repression by the Bolsheviks. But many still argue that Bolshevik rule had not been firmly established in the chaotic aftermath of the 1917 revolution and that the killers had not acted at the direct behest of revolutionary leaders. The murders, they argue, cannot constitute a politically motivated crime."

An egregious argument, at best, borne of fallacy & revision, but one the old communist elite and their bureaucratic descendants will fight hard to preserve. "Politically motivated" is central to Bolshevism, with death & destruction the reward for any who dissent. Concepts like "unalienable rights, limited government, and due process" are foreign to its spread. All but the most obtuse, ivory tower academia highlight the hundreds of millions murdered by communist regimes over the decades. Whatever atrocities committed in the name of religion are miniscule by comparison.

The Bolsheviks murdered Tsar Nicholas II and his family. Is it time to make amends?
"Post-Soviet Kremlin leaders have not entirely shied away from denouncing the last tsar's murder and the horrors of Soviet repression.

Russia's first president, Boris Yeltsin, speaking at the 1998 burial of Nicholas and his family, urged Russians to repent for a "bloody century." The current president, Dmitry Medvedev, likewise condemned those who still defend the Stalinist regime and warned against attempts to write the millions of Soviet repression victims "out of history."

These words, however, have yet to translate into any legal condemnation of Soviet-era criminals, including the killers of Nicholas, his wife, and children. Judging by the embattled probe into the Romanov massacre, the chances of that happening soon appear slim."

Or it could simply inflame old wounds, between old enemies.

From January, this year: Yushchenko brings Stalin to court over genocide.
"Kiev’s Court of Appeals has found Josef Stalin and other Bolshevik leaders guilty of genocide against the Ukrainians during the famine, or “Holodomor” as it is called in Ukraine, of 1932-33."

Moscow didn't appreciate that too much.

And Now for Something Completely Stupid...

Babies with laser eyes.

I think some guys from the DoD might be paying them a visit.

Black, by Popular Demand

The great Dr. Walter E. Williams gives us a little history and guidance in one of the more important issues on our national plate: Census and the Constitution don't mix.

"What purpose did the Constitution's framers have in mind ordering an enumeration or count of the American people every 10 years? The purpose of the headcount is to apportion the number of seats in the House of Representatives and derived from that, along with two senators from each state, the number of electors to the Electoral College.

The Census Bureau tells us that this year, it will use a shorter questionnaire, consisting of only 10 questions. From what I see, only one of them serves the constitutional purpose of enumeration — namely, "How many people were living or staying at this house, apartment or mobile home on April 1, 2010?" The Census Bureau's shorter questionnaire claim is deceptive at best."

I'm in agreement with Dr. Williams.

Missouri Dept. of Social Services and a Funeral

Guess which one was more pleasant?

Death is the most democratic process ever invented - no one is disenfranchised, yet if the gub'mint ran the back end, at cemeteries, the bodies would be piled high in the streets. So, let's have 'em run the front end at hospitals??

But, I digress.

A long time friend died late last week, and I attended his memorial & funeral. It was a quite unexpected, but peaceful passing at home; the kind often wished for in solemn prose.

He was autistic, near middle aged, a superb prayer warrior, and a high maintenance pain in the behind - who made the world a better place simply by touching so many lives. We should all be half as innocent, honest & persistent as him. It's not "goodbye", but simply "till we meet again." He will be missed.

During that same interim, I had the misfortune of dealing with the Missouri Dept. of Social Services - family support division. My just turned 19 year old son has autism - specifically Asperger's Syndrome - along with Tourette's Syndrome, OCD, and ADD. He's challenging. He's exhausting. He's a high maintenance pain in the behind. And he'll probably be under my care all the days of his life.

The Missouri Dept. of Social Services is responsible for providing my son's Medicaid insurance, which not only pays his medical doctors, but also pays for any treatment for his behavior disorders. There is an annual "Reinvestigation Notice" to review the recipient's finances, or that of his host family, in order to weed out the scammers and schemers bilking the system. We received ours this past January...

But, whoa! Hold up there, lb1901 - "Mr. free market, blast the nanny state-ers at every opportunity, conservative Republican." Medicaid for your son???

Three points:
1) My ex signed him onto Medicaid when she had primary custody of him as a child. I was not included in that decision. The court ordered custody agreement dictated that the Medicaid shall remain in place, regardless, until my son is a legal adult.

2) At 19 years old, the state does considers my son a legal adult, and he wants to continue this Medicaid coverage. Unless I petition the court for guardianship or persuade him to sign a medical power of attorney, I cannot force him otherwise.

3) The state of Missouri currently exempts all private insurance companies within state boundaries from covering any and all autism related costs. So, even if I did have power to drop my adult son from Medicaid, there is no private insurance available. Yet, if we were able to purchase insurance across state lines, that would remove one of these barriers.

Missouri Senate bill 618, which recently made it out of sub committee by a 9-0 vote, will require private insurance to cover autism related treatment, and allow the purchase of insurance across state lines! It's far from ideal, but it's a big step in the right direction.

A similar bill - known as "Kate's law" is making its way through the Kansas legislature (SB12 & HB 2367).

Now that's health care reform I can support!

Meanwhile, my son & I are forced to deal with the customer no-service, gub'mint insurance monopoly known as the Missouri Dept. of Social Services.

Remember that annual "Reinvestigation Notice?" I responded promptly and honestly about Patrick's finances: one saving account, in my name, in which he is a joint tenant.

On Feb. 10, I received an "Adverse Action Notice" informing me that my son's Medicaid will be terminated on Feb. 18, because I did not supply adequate documentation about his finances. Documents? What documents? And I have only 8 days to resolve the situation? Eight days?

Doesn't private business, who has to provide excellent service to their customers, work on a 15 or 30 day clock, without draconian declarations? But we're talkin' about a customer no-service, gub'mint insurance monopoly, here.

I called the provided local number to the case worker at the local Family Support Division office Feb. 11, a Thursday. I left a message on her voicemail, then received no call back. I called again, twice, on Friday, Feb. 12. Left two more messages on voicemail. No call back.

The offices are closed on the weekend, so I tried again on Monday, Feb. 15, a holiday. I tried to leave a voicemail - again - but the mailbox was full! So, I sent a terse fax detailing my frustration having been threatened with the termination of my son's Medicaid, with only 3 days left to resolve the situation, yet no one from that office can be reached for questions!

But, wait, There's more!

Tuesday, Feb. 16, I called the main office in Jefferson City, Missouri and spoke with Kaye, a case manager who got an earful of my frustration. She contacted the local office. I then received a phone call, shortly before 5 PM, with answers to my specific questions. It only took 6 days for our customer no-service, gub'mint insurance monopoly to respond.

Bear with me. I'm almost done.

All this outfit wanted was a faxed copy of the last two bank statements that had my son's name on it. That's it. For lack of that, we were threatened with termination of coverage within 8 days?!

On Wednesday morning, Feb. 17, I faxed the necessary papers. All I asked in return was a call back to insure that they indeed had received this information, that it was adequate for their inquiry, and that my son's MediCaid would not be canceled.

They called me back, alright. Late this afternoon - Thursday, Feb. 18.

The gub'mint sure has a lousy way of running a railroad, with no option to take your business elsewhere. If this is a glimpse of the wonderful service we'll all receive from the federal government's "free" Obama-care coming down the pike, I say No Thanks!

There'd be more riposte in a grave yard.

We Don't Call 'Em Gub'mint Schools for Nothing

Do you remember junior high (remember when it was called jr. high)?, and you thought to yourself,"I'll never use any of this in the real word!"

Your tax dollars at work, citizens.

Michelle Obama Keeps Socialist Books In The White House Library. (photo)

From our good friends in North Dakota (what is it with these guys?):

Obviously, all of these are strictly for relativistic light reading when the TOTUS is in for service. Nothing more.

Actually, many of these titles can probably be found in any public library across the country, so in and of themselves, it's not a big deal. Then again, I don't know of a nationwide outbreak of 'marxist/socialist' advertising aimed at librarians, either.

And, hey. How about that John C. Drew, Ph.D.? A former Marxist-Leninist who claims to have known Barack Obama as a Marxist-Leninist at Occidental College in California. Which was obviously taken out of context.

Obviously.

It's Good to be a Socialist (Bank)

At least according to the Associated Press. And not just those nouveau TARP entities on Wall Street under Obama's watchful eye, either. We're talking state owned and operated since 1919 socialist bank that saved the entire state of North Dakota from economic ruin!! Or something.

Economy prompts fresh look at ND’s socialist bank.

Curiously, buried deep within the story was this sentence:

"The bank also pays no state or federal taxes and has no deposit insurance; North Dakota taxpayers are on the hook for any losses."

Interesting. A ’socialist bank’ playing a capitalist game on a playing field more than slightly tilted to its advantage with cumbersome rules that only apply to the other teams (banks).

Obviously, it’s good to be a socialist!

Although I’m pretty sure the taxpayers – as de facto stock holders – would prefer to also receive personal dividends, rather than just be “on the hook for any losses.”

But obviously, it’s good to be a socialist – as long as there’s other people’s money to appropriate. A glaring distinction with a huge difference that the AP can't seem to grasp.

Oil under $77 as US heating oil, diesel supply up

Unexpectedly, too!

From a perennially perplexed AP:

"Inventories of distillates, which include heating oil and diesel fuel, rose 1.3 million barrels last week, the American Petroleum Institute said late Wednesday. Analysts, eyeing a cold weather spell in much of the U.S. this month, had expected a drop of 1.6 million barrels, according to a survey by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos.

Gasoline inventories also grew while crude supplies fell slightly, the API said."

It's not until the end of the article, almost as an after thought, the AP mentions falling prices. But, even so, wowser. Demand dropped, supplies rose, and prices fell! That's inconceivable. It's almost like the natural outworking of free people buying and selling in a free market, free from gub'mint manipulation, to determine their own affairs.

But the AP is trying hard to warn the Obama administration:
"A recovering U.S. dollar also put pressure on oil prices, as a stronger dollar makes oil more expensive for investors holding other currencies.

The euro fell to $1.3563 on Thursday from $1.3618 late Wednesday in New York, while the British pound was lower at $1.5595 from $1.5686 and the dollar was down to 90.90 Japanese yen from 91.15 yen.

Some analysts expect demand to soon pick up, and conspire with limited supplies to boost prices."

I knew it. A conspiracy! Gee. I wonder if drilling more wells and building more refineries would aleviate those 'limited supplies'?

Happy B-Day Stimulus

Uh, I think maybe you should be buying us the festivities?

CNN (the comrade news network) has a different agenda and bakes a cake to celebrate!

Oh, heck. Let's be generous and gorge on the tax payer purchased birfer day festivities.

Let's see... about 400 billion of the stimulus has been spent so far, which - according to the Obama admins' own pronouncement - has saved roughly 2 million jobs. I'm only a fly-over, bitter clinging, rightwing rube, with a gub'mint scrool edju-ma-caishun, but according to my calculations, that works out to $200,000.00 per job.

And they say Gaff-tastic Joe is the smartest guy in the room.

The Assassination of a Hamas Henchman

It Reads Like a a Tom Clancey Novel. From the Times of London:

"Within an hour of al-Mabhouh checking in his killers had established that room 237 was unoccupied and moved in across the hall. By that evening seven of the team were gathered in the room, waiting for their opportunity.

The killers had lain in wait for al-Mabhouh, whom Hamas admits was involved in the killing of two Israeli soldiers in 1989, since the previous night. Flying in from Paris, Frankfurt, Rome and Zurich, the team of ten men and one woman arrived within three hours of each other. The alleged mastermind of the operation, a Frenchman using the name Peter Elvinger, was the last to arrive at 2.30am on January 19. The team dispersed for the night to hotels near the airport and to the Al Bustan Rotana.

The following morning, several members of the team including Elvinger and the Irish woman, whose passport bore the name Gail Folliard, met at a shopping centre to discuss final preparations for the murder. Nothing was left to chance."

May the Lord have mercy on his miserable soul.

We Have All Been Here Before

OK. Not really.

All that reincarnation crap is just deja vu crap that you pay some ashram big bucks to force feed you, over & over again.

But other people have been here before, and we can learn from their mistakes. Or not. Like the old saying goes, "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to be liberal tenured professors..." Or something.

Victor Hanson ain't one of those. He's actually a very good historian who accurately informs and entertains. Like this paper, Why Did Rome Fall—And Why Does It Matter Now?

"Where does it all end? I have no idea, but offer only competing scenarios: 1) as our debt becomes unsustainable, we react and increase the retirement age, cut spending and entitlements radically, and renew our work ethic (impossible by choice, made possible by necessity), and enjoy a renaissance; 2) we become a UK-like museum, with witty cynical observers, as the new giants in Asia produce the next Microsoft, Exxon, and Ford, and we fade; 3) India and China discover that they too have a rendezvous with suburban blues, environmentalism, consumer regulation, and a pampered citizenry, and there is some sort of shared global postmodernism.

We inherited a wonderful infrastructure from our parents. A superb system of politics and economics was likewise given to us at birth. Many of us try to copy our grandparents and parents whose values and work ethic we increasingly eulogize. But against all that is that Roman notion of luxus, untold wealth and leisure that we see juxtaposed with shrill cries and accusations that we are too poor, exploited, and in need of someone else’s income. The wealthier we become, the louder and angrier we become that we are not even more wealthy."

Is our fate that of ancient Rome? Material progress resulting in ethical regress until those people on the fringe of our influence overtake us with our own successful methodology?

Herr Ahmadinejad Proposes to Israel

Me thinks his definition of 'nuclear family' is not the same as yours and mine.

From the Washington Times editorial pages:

"Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced Thursday that Tehran has the capability to produce weapons-grade uranium but has no intention of building atomic bombs. "At the present time, we have the capability to produce very highly enriched fuel," he said, from 20 percent to 80 percent enriched - in other words, from weapons-usable to weapons-grade. But this is no reason for concern, he assured, because Iran "is brave enough to explicitly announce it if it wants to make a nuclear bomb; it will build it and is not afraid of you."

There is a reason that highly enriched uranium is called "weapons-grade," and it has nothing to do with peaceful uses of nuclear power. It is a measure of Western impotence that the United States went to war with Iraq in 2003 to prevent the very things Iran is announcing with pride in 2010. Had Saddam Hussein made the same claim, the question over weapons of mass destruction would have been settled at once. What is going on in Iran is not the "weapons of mass destruction-related activities" with which Saddam was charged; this is the stuff of nightmares."

World Classless 4sshole: George Lopez

If he'd said the same thing about Hillary Clinton, my opinion would be the same.

On Wednesday night, George Lopez called Sarah Palin a "la cabrona," Spanish for b*tch. (video) And it's not the first time for George to wallow in gender & racialist insults, either.

Per usual, not a peep came from the pundits or talk shows about this vile prime time misogyny from George, yet me thinks quite the sh*t storm would erupt if some idiot was to spew a vulgar insult about George's ethnicity.

Not that there's any hypocrisy, or anything.

Apparently, the surname "Lopez" entitles anyone on national television to be a foul-mouthed bigot. Last January, Jennifer Lopez also called Palin a b*tch, when Jennifer was a substitute host on George's show.

You might recall that Jennifer Lopez and her husband are a co-owners of the Miami Dolphins football team. Although, I haven't heard if the NFL will divest her of ownership for spewing such "divisive comments," ala Limbaugh.

Not that there's any hypocrisy, or anything.

The only good news is that ratings for "Lopez Tonight" are in the toilet, and we can only hope that this forum of gender & racialist insults will soon be canceled.

So, here's hoping that change comes to George Lopez, a World Classless 4sshole.

Saudi religious police ban all things 'Valentine'.

"Members of the feared religious police were inspecting shops for red roses, heart-shaped products or gifts wrapped in red, and ordering store owners to get rid of them, the official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

Red-colored or heart-shaped items are legal at other times of the year, but as Feb. 14 nears they become contraband in Saudi Arabia. The kingdom bans celebration of Western holidays such as Valentine's Day, named after a Christian saint said to have been martyred by the Romans in the 3rd Century."

But don't be alarmed. The Saudis engage in this backward, totalitarian thinking every year.

SOTUS—Straw Man of the United States

I’m Mr. Obama’s most trusted rhetorical friend.

TY IOTW

I Agree with the President; He's an Ignoramus

Obama ‘Agnostic’ on Deficit Cuts, Won’t Prejudge Tax Increases.

"The whole point of it is to make sure that all ideas are on the table," the president said in the interview with Bloomberg BusinessWeek, which will appear on newsstands Friday. “So what I want to do is to be completely agnostic, in terms of solutions."

OK. So the man said 'agnostic,' but anyone familiar with Greek knows 'agnostic' means 'one who does not know' and translates directly in Latin to 'ignoramus.' Besides, Greek is so Iron Age.
"Obama repeatedly vowed during the 2008 presidential election campaign that he would not raise taxes on individuals making less than $200,000 and households earning less than $250,000 a year.

When senior White House economic adviser Lawrence H. Summers and Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner suggested in August that the administration might be open to going back on that pledge, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs quickly reiterated the president’s promise."

So I think he actually is prejudiced. How about a video?

Marines push 'The Breacher' against Taliban lines.

From an approving AP:

"The Breachers, metal monsters that look like a tank with a cannon, carry a 15-foot (4.5-meter) -wide plow supported by metallic skis that glide on the dirt, digging a safety lane through the numerous minefields laid by the Taliban.

If there are too many mines, the Breachers can fire rockets carrying high-grade C-4 explosive up to 150 yards (meters) forward, detonating the hidden bombs at a safe distance so that troops and vehicles can pass through safely.

The detonations — over 1,700 pounds (770 kilograms) of Mine Clearing Line Charges — send a sheet fire into the air and shock waves rippling through the desert in all directions.

Reporters watched the "Breacher" in action Wednesday as Marines edged closer to Marjah, a southern Taliban stronghold that NATO commanders plan to attack in the coming days in the largest joint NATO-Afghan operation of the Afghan war. Troops are expected to face a massive threat from mines and roadside bombs as they push into Marjah, 380 miles (610 kilometers) southwest of Kabul.

"This may be the largest IED threat and largest minefield that NATO has ever faced," says Brig Gen. Larry Nicholson, the commander of all Marines in southern Afghanistan."

Well, well, a positive report on the military beat down about to be delivered against these taliban rats. Good thing Obama doesn't have an "R" after his name or there would be copious 24/7 criticism about wasting men & material in this Afghan 'quagmire'.

Give 'em h3ll, guys!, but don't expect these knuckle draggin' taliban rats to come out to battle and fight like men: Taliban plans to melt away into civilian population.
Taliban fighters awaiting the Nato offensive in Helmand are planning to melt into the civilian population in preparation for a hit-and-run campaign against British and American troops.

"Charlie Wilson's War" Congressman Dies; Aged 76

He was a well known ear markin’ skunk & a drunk, but he was also a pro-military, commie fighting democrat with a knack for the wheel n deal.

"As a long-time member of the House Appropriations Committee, Mr Wilson quietly helped to steer billions of dollars to the CIA, which distributed the funds to buy Afghan fighters high-tech weapons such as Stinger missiles, which were used to shoot down Soviet helicopter gunships.

"I just saw the opportunity to grab the sons o'bitches by the throat," the fiercely anti-communist Mr Wilson told the Dallas Morning News in a 2007 interview."

I could almost vote for a guy like that.

In the movie “Charlie Wilson’s War,” hollyweird veered dangerously close to a pro-American, CIA cheer against Soviet aggression – but it’s been a downhill race to h3ll ever since.

Wilson also warned against abandoning the Afghans after the Soviet withdrawl, which America did. And we all know how that turned out.

I guess "Good Time" Charlie Wilson(D) was the last of a breed. R.I.P.

Vampires

Apparently, there's at least one in Jefferson City, Missouri who can't wait to sink his fangs directly into private bank accounts. And he even has Republican lawmakers willing to sponsor it!

Mo. Governor Seeks to Tap Banks for Overdue Taxes.

"JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missourians with overdue taxes may soon have more difficulty avoiding payment. Gov. Jay Nixon(D) is a proposing a law that would let the state seize delinquent taxes directly from people's bank accounts.

The new powers are included among eight specific proposals Nixon has embraced for enhancing the Department of Revenue's ability to track down tax deadbeats and collect what the state is owed.

He is banking first that the Legislature will approve the changes to state tax laws. Then he is banking that those changes will generate $22 million next year to help balance the budget and an additional $49 million in the 2012 fiscal year.

I don't know about you, but that kind of confiscatory power creeps me out. Granted, on the surface, it sounds like responsible policy against dead beats. Everyone should pay their full tax liability, and suffer consequences if they don't pay, but isn't there something written down somewhere about due process & unreasonable seizure?

And I wonder how this squares with Missouri Tax Payer's Bill of Rights? Or will all that be rudely null and void??

Admittedly, the details of the Nixon's plan are sketchy:
"Many lawmakers still are not fully aware of the details of Nixon's proposals to increase state revenues, particularly those dealing with tax collections.

Senate Ways and Means Committee Chairman Carl Vogel, R-Jefferson City, said Friday that he plans to sponsor legislation making Nixon's tax collection changes. But Vogel acknowledged that he wasn't familiar with the provision allowing the state to transfer money out of people's bank accounts."

Clueless in Jeff City. I wonder if they'll even read the bill before they vote on it??

And the Banks aren't happy about it, either.
"A lot of our bankers think they're becoming the policemen for money laundering and drug enforcement and terrorism, and it just gets to be too much," Ratliff said.

Now banks would be aiding in another government function -- tax collection.

"We're not too keen on informing on our customers," (Missouri Bankers Association Exec. V.P. Bill) Ratliff said. "We realize the job of the Revenue Department is to collect taxes. The job of banks is to provide banking services to our customers, not to turn them in."

This type of confiscatory power is available in nine other states, and there are parallels for seizure of assets available to other Missouri agencies:
"Unbeknownst perhaps to many Missourians, the Department of Social Services already has a similar power to seize money from people's bank accounts to collect overdue child support. That program works by periodically matching lists of bank account holders with a list of people behind on their child support payments. The banks participate on a voluntary basis."

What the article doesn't mention is where that power the Department of Social Services has to seize money from people's bank accounts comes from: a court order.

Child support is a court ordered judgment, issued after a respondent had his/her day in court. This court ordered judgment is subject to enforcement via wage garnishments or liens.

Currently, the Missouri Dept. of Revenue utilizes county Prosecuting Attorneys to recover any delinquent taxes owed the State of Missouri. Those Prosecuting Attorneys contact the delinquent tax payer in an attempt to resolve the matter outside of court. If unsuccessful, the prosecuting attorney files a civil suit with the court and a judgment is rendered, and liens or seizures implemented.

It seems to me what Gov. Nixon is proposing smells a lot like desperation, driven by government's greed for a quick fix. It by-passes the courts altogether, and veers dangerously close to imperial power territory, which by definition curtails your liberty & rights.

I don't know about you, but that kind of confiscatory power creeps me out.

Fight the Smears: No Apologies

Momma always said never speak ill of the dead, but I haven't listened to Momma for a while.

The scandal plagued, Democrat congressman John "King of Pork" Murtha died yesterday, aged 77. Even upon his death bed, he never apologized to the exonerated Haditha Marines he viciously slandered as "cold blooded killers" - all the while U.S. military men & women were embroiled in the bloodiest fighting of the Iraq War.

He was also an outspoken critic of the Iraq War labeling it "a flawed policy wrapped in illusion," which I'm sure heartened our enemies and gave them a useful idiot propaganda tool. Congressman Murtha never apologized for that sedition, either.

188 Days and Counting

(Update below)

"Still, a press corps that periodically complained about George W. Bush's infrequent news conferences should not let Obama walk away from the practice unchallenged. And some of its members have protested. [CBS’s Chip] Reid raised the issue with Gibbs at a briefing last month, and Hearst columnist Helen Thomas said the president has "gone an obscenely long time, not holding one."

Not one to let a chance to obfuscate pass him by, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs quipped in response, "you all, to a person, reminded me of our dramatic overexposure."

This lil bit of B.S. from Gibbs totally ignores the fact that the numerous self-aggrandizing presentations which our historic President has appeared are solely responsible for that "dramatic overexposure" - not the one truly legitimate, regular public venue for the President - a White House press conference.

Or is that too transparent?

Update: speaking of over exposed...

Updated update:

From a defensive WaPo:
Obama holds traditional news conference to talk bipartisanship

"Administration officials insisted that the visit was not a concession to Obama's detractors (or a reaction to recent articles in The Washington Post and New York Times about the lack of presidential news conferences). "Given the White House press corps' obsession with their own press conferences, this was an opportunity to use their own vanity against them and amplify an important message to the American people," a senior administration official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity."

Obviously, that was a pronouncement from the Charm Czar.
"That message was about bipartisanship -- a subject Obama has been raising increasingly over the past few weeks in response to evidence that voters are angry about both parties' lack of cooperation and accomplishments."

Bi-partisanship, my furry behind!

Democrat Lt. Gov. Candidate Exits Illinois Race

"When he was a candidate, Cohen said a 2005 domestic battery case against him had been dismissed. It was revealed after he won the primary that his girlfriend at the time was a prostitute who accused him of threatening her with a knife, and the charge was dismissed only because she failed to appear in court, the Tribune reported.

Cohen admitted using steroids, allegedly failed to make child support payments and has been named in dozens of lawsuits in connection with back taxes, the newspaper said."

Wowser. How 'Chicago' of him.

The UPI devoted 3 whole paragraphs to the story. The NY Times matched the UPI. Not to be outdone, the Chicago Tribune went the extra mile and published two whole paragraphs.

I guess Mr. Cohen should've put an "R" after his name for incessant news coverage of his campaign, his (alleged) crimes, and political party.

But, to be fair (and we here at lb1901 are nothing, if not fair), after we complained about the AP's devotion of 981 words to the DC snow storm over the weekend, the AP did consume some bandwidth and wrote 623 words about crooked Cohen's Chicago trainwreck - after it made a noise too big to ignore.

But why were so many red flags not exploited by Cohen's competitors during the primaries??

James Brown Named S.I. Studio Host of Decade

"Arguably the most ego-free sports broadcaster on the air, Brown manned Fox's successful NFL pregame show for years before joining CBS in 2005 and making that show more relevant, both in content and the ratings. The broadcaster has a unique ability to defer to talent sitting around him."

OK, so I'm a little late on this Dec. 2009 announcement, and, technically, the decade doesn't end until Dec. 31st, 2010, but it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Mr. Brown is also this year's Super Bowl host, on CBS.

But what I found even more interesting was James Brown's bedrock Christian faith, and that he is an ordained minister.

Brown talks about "My 3 Keys to Integrity" in the February issue of Guide Post magazine.

I am curious, though, how this accomplished, high profile "Man of Faith" squares with the liberal hypocrisy of clucking religious bigots, like those on "The View?" Obviously, it means those cluckers are racist. Or something.

But, I digress. It looks to finally be a good game, this Super Bowl: the number one QB VS the number two QB, plus swarming defense VS shoot out offense. Colts 37 - Saints 24. Pass the pizza & chips!

Blog Notes

We had a new snow storm move through yesterday. Not a lot of snow, but wet and fluffy. It clung to the trees and painted 'em all a very pretty pristine white. For a brief early morning moment, even the traffic lanes and thoroughfares were gently smoothed & quieted by this blanket of white. Winter can be beautiful, but I want Spring.

Of course, this new precipitation had all the local weather people buzzed with up to the minute meteorlogical-gasms. I blame glow bull warming.

Perhaps this is the same storm now paralizing the Eastern U.S.

PS: I'm still down with a monster head cold. Might be back later.

Update: From a garrulous AP with an 891 word meteorlogical-gasms of its own:

"(AP) WASHINGTON (AP) - Mid-Atlantic residents were buried Saturday from a likely record-setting blizzard the president jokingly called "Snowmageddon," and those brave enough tried to clear a path through the wet, heavy mounds of thigh-high snow."

891 words about a snow storm. And even a clever quote from the President.

Too bad the AP doesn't devote this much attention to things that really matter, like Congressional Democrat backroom deals, or a knife wielding, tax evading democrat nominee for Illinois Lt. Gov., or Democrat Senators getting cozy with 108 senior Washington lobbyists in Miami Beach, but the AP obviously has its priorities.

Pew Poll Corroborates Political Ignorance of Obama Voters

Elections have consequences. Do you remember this video?

It's a short documentary film by John Ziegler made shortly after Obama's election to the presidency. In the film , Ziegler asked 512 Obama voters twelve simple questions - which party currently controls congress?; who said there are 57 states?; which candidate threatened to bankrupt the coal industry?; which candidate has an unwed pregnant teen daughter?; which candidate spent 150k on campaign clothing?; who is Nancy Pelosi?;etc (guess which questions these obama voters got correct & which questions many had no idea).

Zogby published a poll of Ziegler's results in 2008. The poll was, at turns, ignored by the MSM, then savaged by the Leftists as 'biased, racist, flawed, etc.'

Recently, the Pew Research Center did their own poll of democrat, republican & independent voters concerning broader political knowledge, and the results corroborate the political ignorance of Obama voters. In short:

-- On no question did 60% (!) of the respondents get the right answer.

-- Republicans got an average of 5.9 correct, while Democrats scored just 4.9. Even often maligned Independents did better than Democrats, averaging 5.6 correct answers.

-- On almost every question, men out did women, whites got more answers correct than blacks, the more educated did better than the less schooled, the richer did better than the poorer, the older outscored the younger, and Republicans did best while Democrats did worst.

All of this dove tails to a 2008 Rasmussen poll that concluded 71% of Obama's supporters oppose the Constitution of the U.S. I blame gub'mint schools, of course.

Ziegler's analysis is here, with a link to Pew's conclusions, as well.

Take Pew's 12 question poll yourself. (no peeking!)

PS: Yes, I aced it ('natch).

Haitians fear loups-garous in the best of times and even more since a powerful earthquake wrecked the capital of Port-au-Prince two weeks ago, killing as many as 200,000 people and forcing hundreds of thousands more to sleep outside in vast camps or on the streets."
